RESEARCH PATHWAY

Here the Competitive Research students and Ms. Lock are excited to finally submit their research papers for review by the members of NYCSEF. We are all rooting for you!

The research students are participating in a DNA research internship under the supervision of Ms. Lock.

Year 2: Biology Research

Students enrolled in Biology Research have taken 1 year of STEM Fundamentals.

 

Course Description:

In the broadest sense of the word, the definition of research includes any gathering of data, information and facts for the advancement of knowledge.

Within this course, students will

  • work with a partner to design and carry out an experiment that addresses a real world problem.

  • perform extensive background research on their biological topic of choice, formulate a hypothesis, design a controlled experiment to test the hypothesis, and collect preliminary data to analyze trends.

  • Culminating task: scientific research proposal for experiment continuation in Junior Year.

Year 3: Competitive Research

Students enrolled in Competitive Research have taken 1 year of Biology Research.

 

Course Description:

Students enrolled in the Competitive Research course will

  • immerse themselves in the research process

  • develop an original scientific investigation (continuation of Year 2 Research courses)

  • present research at competitive science fairs and contests at the local, regional, and national levels.

  • develop exceptional reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.

  • produce high-level research projects that can improve their chances of gaining admission and scholarships to top college programs.

Year 4: Advanced Placement Science + Hospital Internship

4th year research students choose from a wide selection of Advanced Placement Science courses

  • A.P. Environmental Science

  • A.P. Physics C: Mechanics

  • A.P. Chemistry (recommend if enrolled in the hospital internship)

Students will take Advanced Placement Exams in May. Scores earned may result in receiving college credit.
